Planning Team Minutes of June 8th, 2015

Work and play in our neighbourhood. Through building strong

Relationships, we work together to ensure our neighbourhood remains a

Safe and healthy place where everybody has equal access to supports,

Opportunities, employment, food and the things that help us live a happy

Life.

Caring Committee – Aileen

  • Card sent to Sam & Chris Prosser for their loss

  • Card sent to Joan who is moving away

Urban Farms – Adam

  • Made a report to the committee

  • Approved for construction

  • Will be ready in 2016 for farming

  • Proposals are going out to construction companies

Children Garden – Cathy and Marlena

  • Working on garden in Oriole Crescent going to Saturday with a core group

  • They are looking to expand their core group

  • Looking for funds to have a BBQ to get more people out

  • They would like to have the BBQ on July 6th or 7th

  • They are going to connect with Laura for a small grant. All approved.

SPRC – Laura

  • Are now located at 350 King St. E. at First Place

  • Tomorrow is the tour for Tamarack there will be a group at McQuesten at 3 and 5

  • Seniors will be playing cards when they come

NLI – Jaclyn & Melissa

  • Have graduated from the program and are excited to get the program up and running in September

MCYU – Monika

  • This is their last weekend here to do workshops

  • Had a couple of kids from the neighbourhood show up

  • Will be coming back in July with an update

  • Expected 100 people but 50 showed up

  • They made the news

Sprouts Camp – Kelly

  • Running a summer camp program for McQuesten and work with the Victory Gardens

  • Kids in neighbourhood can come to farm for 2 weeks in July and 4 weeks in August from 9 – 4

  • They have 120 spots for the summer for only $10.00

  • In July they are going to do a Farmers Market here from 10 – 12

  • Wants to build a relationship with HSR so they can get out to Organic Farms and parents can attend too

McMaster – Angela

  • From Crunch

  • Looks into urban neighbourhoods

  • Working with NA Strategy

  • How effective is it, and is it making a change

  • Did a survey of 296 residents in 2013-2014

  • Had more females then males

  • Results mirror what is in the McQuesten Neighbourhood Action Plan

  • Information from the booklet can be found on the McQuesten webpage

Block Party – Casey

  • Will start planning the Block Party now

  • Casey, Melissa, Jaclyn, Laura, and the party planners will be helping

McQuesten Opportunities Creators – Nicole

  • Completed 200 Surveys for J4J

  • They are in the final phase now have to analyze data

  • Swag items are all in

  • Received a Laidlaw grant for $6000.00

  • Hired a videographer

  • There was not a lot of teens at the Spring Crawl but they had lots of people at Celebration Day

  • Three new people joined their group

  • Using social media and grabbing followers on Facebook and Twitter

HPS – Tracy

  • There has been no traffic complaints in this neighbourhood

  • There is street robberies and pellet gun issues

  • Only hearing about drugs in the apartment buildings

  • Welcome any information and you can stay anonymous

The Bridge – Wayne

  • They help offenders who get out of jail in getting back into neighbourhoods

  • They are usually starting over with nothing

  • Bridge House is on Barton Street and has 6 people at a time

  • They need funds

  • Raising money by doing a WingFest on August 5th from 4 -8

  • Tickets in advance are $12 and are $15 at the door

  • You get 8 wings for the price of a ticket, dessert, live entertainment, and they have judging for the best wings

  • If you know any eateries that will participate you can email Casey to get information

  • They need volunteers

OEYC

  • Free BBQ on June 18th from 10 – 2

  • They are closed on the 18th

Communal Garden Beds– Kelly

  • There are still 3 community gardens beds available for $15.00
