Agenda – Corrections: Approval of minutes should say April 13th not March 9th. Added to the agenda was Community Partner Updates and Action Team #3. Moved by Amanda, 2nd by Anthony

Treasures Report – Handed out on separate paper. Moved by Pat, 2nd by Amanda.

McQuesten Opportunity Creators – Nicole:

  • Couch design in progress, was donated by McQuesten

  • On May 23rd from 2 – 6 will be their first event

  • Finalizing swag items for The Crawl; pens, business cards, flyers, banners and T-shirts are being ordered

  • This young group has been amazing

  • Very nice to have a youth perspective

  • We need to encourage people to work and talk with the youth

  • Need more youth to get involved. They have a facebook page and their email is mcquestenyouthoc@gmail.com.

SPRC – Laura:

  • They are moving on Wednesday to First Place on Wellington and King St.

  • Office closed this week

  • People can sign up for free tickets to the Building Momentum Event. All neighborhood’s will be present, and people can find out what other communities are doing

NLI – Jaclyn:

  • We are on week 8 and learning so much about our project. There is 2 more weeks till it is completed.

MCYU – Monika:

  • On May 30th their event will launch

  • “MCYU in the City” McQuesten is the first place they are launching their program before going to other neighbourhoods

  • Event 11 – 3. 5 different workshops, neighbours will attend 3 out of the 5. Will be food available.

  • Looking to come out to The Crawl to advertise. They will be put near the youths.

  • Looking for youth that are in grades 6 -8 but older kids can participate. Kids that are under grade 6 will need adult with them to participate.

  • They will have swag

Love IQ – Evelyn:

  • Looking for teenagers between 12 and 17

  • Want to give them knowledge about STD’s and risky behaviours

  • Helps teens become more media savvy to know if things are to their advantage

  • Relationship intelligence training about what a good person is and a guide to help young people to think about their life goals

  • Will be 8 40 minute periods and the cost is free. Will receive a certificate when completed.

  • They would like to offer the course in McQuesten but they need to talk to the HWCDSB to have their curriculum approved

  • Need to have more dialogue on this subject

Community Garden – Jem:

  • Would like to welcome our new community garden coordinator Jem

  • Registration open for plots, and lots are still available

  • Opening date is Saturday 16th from 9 to 11. Seeds and compost are available and people will be there to answer questions.

  • The City of Hamilton is giving away free soil. First come, first served basis

Rec Center – Jesse:

  • Built strong partnerships with the high schools

  • Bulldogs building Bulldogs is a mentoring grade 7 and 8 youths

  • Will be 2 – 2hour tryouts at nights

  • When you participate you can be eligible for a BBQ

  • Using varsity athletes for Churchill floorball at Churchill. 3 players on a team that represent Canada.

  • Offering Youth Leadership camp at Churchill on the 3rd week of July. Cost is $130.00 and they can help finance.

  • Advance aquatic classes – Bronze medallion and bronze cross done over 6 classes

  • The youth after school programs had mixed success. Crossfit had a strong numbers with 12 to 15 youths participating actively.

Public Health Nurse – Rachel:

  • Has met with most people from the area, but still looking for people that she has not met yet

  • Would like people to encouraging neighbours to come out to the BISTRO

Tamarac – Pat:

  • Organization that does community development conferences at the Perkins Center for 3 days and 2 tours

  • They will go to the Rogers Computer Lab, Seniors room, Boys & Girls Club, then stop in the McQuesten room for coffee, tea, and snacks. Will then proceed to the food bank, The clothing closet, then on to the grass area with the youth conversation couch,

  • Farmer’s Market, all the gardens will have a display

  • Hillcrest, and the City of Hamilton will have a display of the exercise circuit

  • 180 people registered

  • Anyone who provides services can get a pamphlet ready to be given out. Laura will print them.

Urban Farms – Adam

  • Design is complete and printing up large poster boards that will be out next week

  • Will be putting together a display

  • 1:30 – 4:30 on May 25th will be in council chambers to get approval for construction

  • Hoping to work over summer and the fall

  • Sprout Camp will take place in August and will be for ages 5 – 15

  • Did Janes Walk and want to make a brief documentary of the Gardens

The Crawl – Laura:

  • Have the grant applications it has typically cost $700 the last couple of years

  • Party Planners put in grant for $1500.00. Feeds about 600 people. Moved by Jaclyn and 2nd by Rosie. All in favour

  • Youth going to share around to see if anymore youth can volunteer and receive volunteer hours in return

Thank You – Pat:

  • A trust fund has been started called the Lang St. Trust Fund for the major fire last month

  • Needed a lawyer for this trust fund, sent a thank you note to McHugh Whitmore

  • Over $800.00 raised right now, but still taking gift cards

  • The families have now been placed. People need to get tenant insurance

  • Look for a photographer for the families that lost all their photos

Spaghetti Dinner – Jaclyn and Melissa:

  • Selling tickets for a spaghetti dinner that will happen on June 18th

  • Tickets are $5.00 each

  • Will be door prizes and entertainment

  • All proceeds will go to the children to help them get new uniform shirts for their new schools

H.P.O. – Dyanna:

  • Not for profit organization that serves the community

  • Partnerships with The City of Hamilton

  • Join them and be their guest on May 23rd 7:30pm at Hamilton Place to experience the H.P.O.

  • Tickets are free but need help spreading the word around

  • The voucher gives them 2 free tickets but they have to call in to get the tickets

  • Motion for the youth to distribute 2nd by Nicole; all agree

Action Team 3

  • Meet 4 times a year now vs monthly

  • If you have a youth program you want to included please tell Jesse by tomorrow

Deb:

  • Early words in now in St. Helens. Arrangements for appointments can now be made here

Senyo:

  • The neighbourhood Action Check-In has now been completed and copies can be found at St. Helen’s

Ketmanee:

  • This Thursday will be hosting a celebration of growth @ Churchill from 4 – 7

  • Will be lots of prizes, music, and fun things for everyone

Mila:

  • Free drop in Youth Leadership at McQuesten

  • Ellis Ave. membership is $5.00 a year

  • 8:45 - 3:30 there is Ontario Early Years Center and is open all summer
